Smithsonian Exhibit in Chelsea? Huh? When?If you noticed the September listing about the Cooking Contest held by the Chelsea District Library, you might be wondering, "What Smithsonian exhibit?!" Brought to us by the Michigan Humanities Council, the Smithsonian exhibit in question is called "Key Ingredients: America By Food" and will be coming to six Michigan cities, including Dundee, Frankenmuth, Calumet, Cheboygan, Whitehall and our very own Chelsea. In Chelsea, the exhibit will be displayed at the new McKune Memorial Library next year from May 25 through July 8, 2007. The purpose of the exhibit is to explore the impact that food has on people, families and communities... or on "culture and heritage" as they say. Our every day lives and family history are hugely affected by the food we enjoy as part of our family traditions, regional influences, every day customs and holiday celebrations. As part of the exhibit, there will be photos and artifacts on display and numerous activities and community programs. Why Chelsea? Well, seeing how significant Jiffy is to Chelsea's history, it makes a lot of sense for the exhibit to come to our town. Not to mention the fame of our very own award-winning Common Grill restaurant. What Are All Those Cool Doors Around Town? They are all part of a community art project brought to us by the Chelsea Center for the Arts, called "Opening Doors: A Community Celebration of McKune Memorial Library." It features 43 uniquely designed doors painted by artists and groups from the Chelsea Community to celebrate the new library. Check them out on the streets of downtown Chelsea, as well as many other places around town, including the Chelsea Library and the CCA. Brochures about the exhibit are available at the library, the Chelsea Center for the Arts, as well as the art galleries in town and many merchant locations. Visit the Chelsea District Library website for a great overview of the project, as well as lots of photos of the beautiful doors around town. Cultural Arts Studio Now Open in ChelseaThe Tree of Life Cultural Arts studio opened its doors in Chelsea on July 29. The studio offers dance and yoga classes, therapeutic massage, a tea room that serves fresh juices, smoothies, and coffee, and a marketplace selling goods from all over the world including silk wears designed by the owner, Jennifer Giacomelli. There are many interesting dance classes for all ages, such as Afro-modern, belly dance, creative movement, jazz, hip-hop, hand drumming, west African dance, as well as many kinds of yoga and nia. Can't wait to check it out! They are located at 6065 Sibley Rd. (down the road from Timbertown), and of course have a regular listing on our Places To Learn page, too. NEWS FROM THE SUMMER
