What is Fair Trade?

The purpose of Fair Trade is very different from large commercial companies: The Mission Marketplace buys handicrafts to provide work and income for unemployed or underemployed people, rather than to make a profit. Monitoring trends across North America, our suppliers identify opportunities for artisans to create products that can be resold for profit, which helps them earn a decent living.

Our History

For several years, Kevin Frahm operated The Mission Marketplace out of the basement of the First United Methodist Church of Chelsea and dreamed of opening an alternative trade store to provide fairly traded items in the Chelsea community. In the fall of 2004, the Mission Marketplace store opened and Kevin's dream of selling handicrafts and telling the artisans’ stories became a reality as those who shared Kevin's vision came together to make it real.
