Car Seat Safety Laws in Michigan

New Law Effective July 1, 2008

Beginning July 1, 2008, Michigan Law requires all children 4-7 years old or less than 4' 9" tall to be placed in a booster seat properly installed with the vehicle’s lap & shoulder belt. A child’s height is the best predictor of proper seat belt fit.

Children's Car Seat Safety:

• All infants must ride rear-facing until 1 year old and weighing at least 20 pounds.
• Children 1 year old and at least 20 pounds can ride forward-facing in a convertible or combination carset. However, it is best to ride rear-facing as long as possible.
• Booster seats are for children who have outgrown their forward-facing car safety seats. Children should stay in a booster seat until 4' 9" in height.
• Children who have outgrown their booster seats should ride in the back seat using a lap and shoulder belt. Children are required to ride in the back seat until age 13.

Moore Pediatrics hosts car seat clinics on a regular basis. Certified technicians will check that your car seats and booster seats are correctly installed and teach you how to correctly install the seats yourself during a one on one session. These events are free and open to both patients and non-patient families.
